Muscular Back Pain

Muscular Back Pain – Expert Physiotherapy Care

Muscular back pain is one of the most common causes of spinal discomfort, often resulting from overload, poor posture, lifting injuries, prolonged sitting or sudden movements. At our clinic, we provide targeted physiotherapy to relieve muscle spasm, improve flexibility and strengthen the supporting muscles of your spine to prevent recurring episodes.

Whether your pain is recent or has been a long-term problem, our physiotherapists deliver evidence-based treatment to help you move comfortably again.

Common Signs of Muscular Back Pain

  • Sharp or aching pain in the lower or upper back

  • Muscle tightness, knots or spasms

  • Pain that increases with movement or lifting

  • Stiffness after sitting or standing too long

  • Pain that improves with heat, massage or movement

  • Reduced ability to bend, twist or straighten up

Muscular back pain anatomy

Muscular back pain happens when the muscles that support the spine are strained, tight, or unbalanced. Main muscles involved: erector spinae, multifidus, latissimus dorsi, quadratus lumborum, glutes, and hip flexors. These muscles control posture, movement, and absorb loads. Causes: overuse, sudden heavy load, poor posture, weakness, or compensating after an injury. Symptoms: local ache, stiffness, spasms, tenderness, reduced movement, and pain with certain movements or long positions. Treatment: hands-on therapy, strengthening deep stabilisers (multifidus, transverse abdominis), stretching hips and the back chain, and learning better posture and movement to prevent it returning.

How Physiotherapy Helps

Our treatment approach focuses on calming the irritated muscles and restoring normal movement patterns. Key interventions include:

✔ Soft Tissue Release & Massage

Relieves tight, overworked muscles and improves circulation to reduce pain.

✔ Joint Mobilisation

Restores movement to stiff spinal segments and reduces protective muscle spasm.

✔ Dry Needling

Targets deep trigger points for fast pain relief and muscle relaxation.

✔ Stretching & Mobility Training

Improves spinal flexibility and reduces muscular tension.

✔ Strengthening the Core & Spinal Muscles

Builds stability and resilience to prevent future episodes.

✔ Posture Correction & Ergonomic Advice

Addresses workplace and lifestyle factors contributing to your pain.

Areas We Treat for Muscular Back Pain

We provide comprehensive assessment and treatment for all muscle-related back issues, including:

• Lumbar Muscular Strain

Acute episodes where the back “seizes” and movement becomes very painful.

• Trigger Points & Muscle Knots

Common in the erector spinae, quadratus lumborum and gluteal muscles.

• Postural Muscle Fatigue
